I saw the other thread, but it seems to be All About Computer-games...
Since there seem to be p&p games represented here too, I thought I'd ask about the "other gaming"... :-)
Me, I like "Ars Magica" & "Deadlands".
I'm trying to get a handle on "Nobilis" -- I think it may go to my #1 spot.

Re: What's your favorite pen-and-paper RPG?
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 9:28 AMI've played Deadlands once, but I'm really not into Westerns, so didn't like it much. I don't remember there being anything wrong with the game, just the wrong theme for me. :)
My favorite is 2nd ed D&D, although I've been seen at the occasional 3rd ed, and more frequently at the Rifts tables. -

Dyana,
Regarding "Deadlands" -- did you like "Wild Wild West" (either the old series, or the newer movie)? I think of the game as being at least as much horror/fantasy as "western" in theme...
AD*D -- I would *still* be playing 1e of this game, except that I feel it incumbent upon me to help my kids Play Well With Others, so I needed to teach 'em 3.x/d20. ;-) I literally bought D&D3 a few months before a RPG-convention so my daughter could know the rules of the common games there...

Re: What's your favorite pen-and-paper RPG?
Tue, March 13, 2007 - 7:29 AMActually, I kind of hated both. Also hated Trigun because of the Western themes, but managed to bull my way through Cowboy Bebop despite the theme out of sheer stubborness. :) The only western show I ever partially liked was Briscoe County Junoir, but that was just funny. I'm not putting the game down or anything, just saying it's not for me. :)
I'm the opposite on the kid thing, I taught my son 2nd ed on the basis that my main lesson to him is get along socially with everyone, but do what you enjoy. :) It's not always easy to find people who like what you do when it's not as common, but worth the effort, and better to do what you like than do something you don't like as much to appeal to the masses. He's played 2nd, 3rd, and 3.5, and joined me back at the 2nd becuase he liked it better, not just cuz Mom likes it. He's 17, the days of doing things because Mom likes it are long since over. Again, there is nothing wrong iwth your way, just explaining my train of thought. :)

<shrug>
Tastes vary! I rather enjoyed the old series, and the new movie. And, as mentioned, the "Deadlands" game... ;-)
One of the things I like about Deadlands is the "based-off-the-real-world" bit. I prefer real-world-derived gameworlds over pure-fantasy gameworlds.
> Again, there is nothing wrong iwth your way, just explaining my train of thought. :)
Likewise!
So... what other games have you liked?
And, do you thing the GM/Group is a bigger part of it, or is the game-system and/or game-world just as important? Personally, I find that a bad GM or a broken group will make things un-fun *faster* but broken game-system will lead me out just as inevitably...

Wed, November 28, 2007 - 9:32 AMThis looks like a slow forum but I'll post anyway ^_^
I love Rifts - the new ultimate edition makes character creation and GMing easier (though you still need a LOT of books). I also enjoy Savage Worlds homebrew games, and the occasional D&D3.5. I know it's sacrilege to like 3.5 over 2nd, but what can I say? -

Don't feel badly. I could such *much* worse about 2e than "I like 3.x better..." ;-)
I'd use words like "misbegotten," "bloated" and "pustulent."
If I were commenting on 2e, that is.
Which I'm not.

Who doesn't actually think *that* badly of 2e, but admits that he's *never* played a game of it he liked...

Wed, December 5, 2007 - 2:27 PMSay it isn't true! Never played 2e game you liked?? ^_^ I had a few good ones, but damn - 3.5 flows better. And no more THAC0 - that alone was worthy of a huzzah.

Tue, February 12, 2008 - 6:22 PMI love Palladium in general and RIFTS in specific. Of late I'm also very fond of White Wolf's Exalted 2nd Ed.
